Scripture writing is the act of taking time to write out biblical verses by hand. Simply put, it means you’re handwriting Bible verses.

Benefits of Scripture Writing

While this practice may sound basic, it can actually be a powerful tool for developing your faith and deepening your understanding of the Bible.

Not only does scripture writing help you slow down and really absorb the words on the page, but it can also foster a deeper connection between you and God as you engage with His word in a new way.

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. – Psalm 1:1-2

In this beginner’s guide, we’re going to take a look at the best ways to get started with handwriting Bible verses, including the supplies you’ll need, different techniques to try, and helpful tips along the way.

Getting Started with Scripture Writing

To get started with handwriting scripture, you’ll need a few supplies.

You can use any notebook or journal you have on hand, but some people prefer to use a special journal just for their scripture writing.

You’ll also need pens or markers. Many people love using brush pens or calligraphy pens, but you can use any writing tool you feel comfortable with.

Lastly, you may want to consider using a scripture writing plan. A scripture writing plan is a 31-day plan (each month features a theme) that lists a different Bible verse to write down each day.

I’m sharing my free scripture writing plan later on in this post to help get you started.

Keep Things Simple at First

When you’re starting out, I recommend choosing smaller verses that resonate with you and that you’d like to meditate on.

Take the time to really understand and dissect the verses, breaking them down phrase by phrase.

Be sure to make note of any thoughts or reflections that come to mind as you work through them.

Choose a verse (or two) each day and write it down with intention and purpose.

Get Creative

If you enjoy being creative, you can use different calligraphy styles, colored pens or markers, or even incorporate some doodles into your journal.

There are so many different ways to do your scripture writing, and each one offers a unique opportunity to engage with the Bible in a creative way.

When journaling or writing scriptures, remember that the Words themselves are far more important than the visuals. This leads me to my next piece of advice.

Always Keep God First

Don’t worry about having the best journal, pens, or stickers when writing. And definitely don’t stress about making your journal look perfect.

Scripture writing is about studying the scriptures and building a deeper relationship with the Father. It’s not about producing perfect penmanship or artwork.

Stay Consistent

The key to making the most out of your scripture writing practice is to stay consistent. Set aside time each day, even if it’s just a few minutes, to write down a verse or two.

This will help you build momentum and develop a habit that will serve your spiritual growth in the long run.

Over time, you’ll find that writing scripture becomes more and more meaningful, allowing you to deepen your understanding of the Word of God and the spiritual journey.
